All That You Wanted To Know About Aircraft Maintenance Engineering

About AME

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) is slightly different from aeronautical or aerospace engineering. While aeronautical/aerospace engineers with a B.Tech./B.E.degree are involved in designing and manufacturing of aircrafts, the aircraft maintenance engineers repair and maintain the aircraft and keep it in ideal flying condition.Aircraft maintenance engineering is a 3-year training programme. Candidates who successfully complete the programme are issued a license by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). It is very important that the course should only be pursued at institutes that are approved by DGCA.

AME has two major streams

The mechanical stream covers jet and piston engines, andlight and heavy aircrafts.

The avionic stream covers radio navigation, and electrical and instrument systems.

Eligibility to pursue AME course

Those interested in a career in aircraft maintenance engineering should have completed 10+2 with at least 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The upper age limit is fixed at 23 years beyond which a candidate can’t enter the programme. However, this upper age limit may be relaxed for those who have done a 3 year diploma course in engineering (in any stream) or B.Sc. after 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

The aircraft maintenance engineering course is open to both men as well as women. After completing the training program, the candidates have to appear for aircraft maintenance license examination held by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The licenses are issued for a particular type of aircraft. Hence, aircraft maintenance engineers who have the license of servicing Boeing planes are authorized to inspect only Boeing aircraft and certify its suitability to take off.

Career prospects after aircraft maintenance engineering course

Aircraft maintenance engineers find jobs in aircraft manufacturing, maintenance firms orat airports. Students of AME course can also appear and qualify as AMAeSI (Associate Membership of Aeronautical Society of India), which is considered equivalent to B.Tech.or B.E. program in Aeronautical Engineering by Government of India. They can find jobs as engineers at BHEL, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL), Private and Government airlines, DRDO, Indian Air Force (IAF), and Coast Guard, etc.
